Most recently, Will spent time in the Biden-Harris administration at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a senior political appointee leading external communications for potentially significant issues regarding animal or public health concerns. Most notably, Will was responsible for leading all communications externally and coordinating across the whole of government regarding highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) or bird flu.
Key responsibilities included developing and executing communications strategies regarding major announcements and emerging situations; spearheading media-relations strategies, response and serving as the main spokesperson on topic-specific issues, coordinating and leading communications strategies across a diverse set of USDA agencies, and participating in meetings with and briefing directly the Secretary of Agriculture and other senior officials. This also included significant collaboration and coordination across the whole of government with other senior communications officials in the White House, HHS, CDC, FDA and others.
Currently, Will works as an independent consultant providing counsel on public relations and media strategies, crisis response strategy and messaging, executive thought leadership content and more.
Some of Will's more recent clients include a global healthcare company, local government for a significant southeastern city, major academic institutions, a regional beverage distributor, including and an acclaimed author and expert on personality in business.
Will has deep expertise in the healthcare industry, with 7+ years of payer-specific communications for some of the country’s largest health insurers, both at the national and state level, as well across private and public health products. He also has strong experience working with large hospitals systems, smaller providers, the world’s largest medical device maker, a global vision care company, as well as an array of pharmaceutical companies and international wellness brands.
Will previously spent time as a Healthcare Crisis and Issues specialist at the award-winning, global agency Edelman. While there, he developed for large corporate clients new or overhauled existing global crisis communications plans, issue-specific and rapid response playbooks, as well as managed abrupt or ongoing crises regarding product recalls, health payor and provider contract disputes, and strategic, but controversial business decisions.
Prior to joining Edelman, Will spent more than 5 years at Ketchum supporting reputation management and issues work across the company’s array of health payer clients, wellness clients, and contributed heavily to new business efforts in the health space.
Before that, Will traveled to support the Tatham Company's senior executive process innovation and change management "Boot Camp" program across the U.S., spent time in electoral politics on a successful gubernatorial campaign and developed top-notch customer service skills in the high-end restaurant industry.
Will is a native Floridian, spent time growing up in Richmond, VA, and has been a longtime resident of North Carolina. He currently lives in Durham, NC with Tig, a half-dachshund mix, and Maya, an English Pointer mix.
Will is an avid outdoorsman, spending as much time as he can hiking, backpacking and camping locally throughout the Southeast and beyond. Will is also a budding world traveler, fairly conversational in Spanish, and is always excited to explore and learn more.
Will holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as a Business Essentials Certification from the UNC-Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School.
